DEPRESSION

WHAT IS DEPRESSION?

Clinical depression is different from feeling sad on occasion. Sadness is an emotion that everyone experiences at one point or another, but depression is when that sadness won’t lift - or maybe it’s been there for so long that you don’t even feel sad anymore, just dull or numb. Depression is characterized by feeling sad, empty, or hopeless more often than not. It’s often accompanied by feeling tired or unable to think, sometimes called feeling “foggy.”

HOW CAN A COUNSELOR HELP ME?

A counselor can help first by giving you hope - that there is another way to be. Your counselor will listen to your concerns and, with you, come up with a plan to begin climbing the mountain that depressive feelings can be. Counselors use a range of techniques, from behavioral to motivational to cognitive methods to help. You don’t have to fight depression alone.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Counseling for depression can look a number of different ways. It may be that you have trouble even coming up with words to describe what you feel - and that’s okay! In counseling, we will work to pinpoint where you feel stuck and then go from there. If talking feels too much, we can always get your hands in the sand tray or even take a walk outside.
